Questions and Answers

Who\What introduced you to Curling?
My Dad when I was about 7. Joined the Jr program in Kelowna at 12. Ryan Kuhn and Jock Tyre are a big reason I love to compete in the sport today.

Do you have any pre-game superstitions or rituals?
Not really, just a consistent warm up routine.

What is your career highlight to date?
The Brier this year. It was just special to be able to be close to home for once with our families and friends. Definitely pretty awesome to play in a full house with the crowd on your side.

What is one shot you would like to try again?
1st shot of the Olympic Trials Final against Jacobs. It has definitely pushed me since to work harder on technique.

Who was influential in your curling development?
Growing up in Kelowna there's many. To name a few Jock Tyre, Ryan Kuhn, Pat Ryan, Rick Folk, Bert Gretzinger, Merry Miller and Scott Kyllo. I was pretty lucky to have some of the best help me out.

What is your favourite sport other then curling?
Golf or Football. I have golfed since age 2 and play to a scratch HDCP. I also love football with a passion. The 49ers are my team.

What is your most embarrassing moment on the curling ice?
Hmm well our team was in Red Deer about 4 years ago and we had mustaches for November and we decided to "just for men" them (dye). I was the ginny pig and went first and we dyed my entire lip jet black. I scrubbed and scrubbed and it wouldn't come off, it looked like someone to a sharpie to my face. I had to play the rest of the weekend like this and I guess it may have given us something extra because after an 0-2 start we won 5 straight and lost the semi to Ferbey. I have a fair number of moments though and my teammates get a good laugh most of the time.

What is your earliest curling memory?
Probably when I was 11 watching Stoughton win the 1996 Brier.

What kind of Training Regimen do you follow?
We train with a personal trainer (Liz Sage) all year round. When we are on the road for competition we taper back a bit and focus more on light cardio workouts. Rick and myself also enjoy many other sports and practices such as Tennis & Yoga.

What are your curling strengths?
I feel I am fairly rounded as a curler. I prefer the draw game but don't mind throwing it hard. I have been working at increasing my hit weight especially when you play with Jason (the gunner) and Jimmy Cotter.

What are your curling weaknesses?
The past year I have come a long way in addressing my weaknesses. They were definitely based on the finesse side where I would tend to over throw.

What kind of goals have you set for yourself?
I set extremely high expectations and because of this I am rarely satisfied. I have always dreamed big and plan to achieve those. My expectations are to win whatever it is we are in. I use this to motivate me and to keep me working.

Do others in your Family curl?
Yes, my Dad and grandparents have curled for years. I would say my entire family are now fans of curling.

What do you enjoy most about curling?
Being able to work as a team, the opportunity to represent your country, travel, meeting new people.

What have you learned through curling?
How to achieve your goals through hard work. You always have to be improving (such is life), the moment you stop is the moment that someone beats you.

Other Olympic Sport you'd like to try?
Golf when it happens

What would you like others to know about curling?
To give it a chance. I find so many just won't try it and when they do they love it. The social side to the game is very fun. My tuesday night mens team consists of guys from high school. They absolutely love the game and at the local bonspiel have up to 20 people watching us play. It all starts with getting on the ice. I encourage you to try it.

Most memorable curling experience?
2006 Jr Nationals before the final. I was skipping Russ Koffski, Derek Ryan, and Mitch Ursel. Before the game Pat Ryan, Bob Ursel, Jim Ursel all gave me advice. Not too often your in the biggest game of your life with that kind of support. After losing Pat told me he had lost 2 finals before he had won his 1st. That being said it just motivated myself for the future.

Who is your greatest competitor?
Always tough to gauge but it would seem that Brad Jacobs would be fitting as he beat us to advance to the Olympics.

Who is your curling rival?
-1

Place you'd like to build a curling club?
Somewhere in the US. It would be great to see them get more involved with the growth of the game. It would be a 2-4 sheet facility that would be based on a football or hockey facility to ensure great spectating and entertainment.

Who are your favourite athlete/heros?
Grew up idolizing Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Fred Couples, Jack Nicklaus and Pavel Bure. Today I enjoy cheering for Rory McIlroy,
